Former Inooro FM radio presenter Waithira Muithirania has declared her interest in the Kandara parliamentary seat ahead of the expected resignation of incumbent member of parliament  Alice Wahome.

Waithira on Thursday, September 29, confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that she will be vying on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket in the race that has attracted several aspirants.

In the August 9 election, she unsuccessfully vied for the Murang’a Women Representative seat on a Jubilee Party.

Waithira came in second in the race, behind UDA’s Betty Maina in what was an extension of the party’s wave that took Mount Kenya by storm. Muithirania garnered 111, 163 votes whilst Maina received 278,428 votes.

Muithirania had also contested for the Women representative position in 2017 where she lost to the now nominated member of parliament Sabina Chege.

When asked about her decision to ditch Jubilee in favour of UDA, she affirmed that she was lost and as such had to retrace her steps to follow the direction of her constituents.

Notably, UDA swept all parliamentary seats in Murang'a County as well as the gubernatorial and Senate seats as part of the yellow wave.

"I was a lost sheep, am back home to and with my people," she stated.

The seasoned radio personality who currently plies her trade with Kihooto FM further expressed her faith that the President William Ruto-led party will conduct a free, fair nomination process to arrive at a candidate in the race. She noted that she is ready for the party primaries.

"I look forward to a fair nomination. They have done it before and they will do it now. We are ready for it," she affirmed.

Other interested aspirants in the race include Chege Njuguna and former Deputy Governor Maina Kamau.

The speaker of the National Assembly will declare the seat vacant upon the receipt of a resignation letter from Alice Wahome whose name was fronted as the nominee for the position of Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary.

The Constitution in article 103 stipulates that the office of a member of parliament falls vacant if a member resigns by writing to the speaker. Wahome's resignation will subsequently pave way for a by-election within 90 days as per the dictates of the law.
