President William Ruto on Wednesday, October 5, made a surprise visit to Parliament buildings to join lawmakers for lunch at the members' lounge.

In videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Ruto arrived at Parliament and greeted the legislators who were on a lunch break after proceedings were adjourned to 2.30 pm.

Ruto made the surprise visit minutes after flagging off Kenyan tea to Accra, Ghana under the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative held at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Nairobi.

While at the KICC event, the president noted that the country's rich growth in tea would be utilised by exporting the product to other African countries in a bid to enhance trade and bilateral efforts.

"There is no reason why countries in the African continent buy tea from other markets while we can provide them tea at the same price. It is unfair for our brothers and sisters to drink low-quality tea while we have the high quality here," he stated.

House Sitting

Part of the agenda in the sitting was to debate President Ruto's address during the joint sitting of the National Assembly and Senate last week. The motion was chaired by Deputy Speaker, Gladys Boss.

"That the House be recorded for the exposition of public policy contained in the Address of the President delivered on Thursday, September 29," read part of the notice from the National Assembly.

The MPs also resolved to sit up to 8.00 pm pursuant to Standing Order 30 (3) with respect to afternoon sittings of Wednesday, October 5, Thursday, October 6 and Tuesday, October 11.

Among the key issues, the lawmakers addressed included the nomination of Cabinet Secretaries and the credibility of the policies being pushed by the Kenya Kwanza government.

"As you would realize, once the Hustler Fund is set for issuance to the hustlers at home, it is important to be clear whether the fund is going to be given as a grant or as an interest-free support to the hustlers because the majority of the citizens would believe that this Hustler Fund is for free, then the leadership will have a problem in recovering the Hustler Fund," Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo stated.
