News anchors have created an aura of excellence due to their appearance on the screens. Some even live glamorous lives, from driving high-end cars to residing in rich suburbs.

Among anchors who have carved a niche for themselves among the upper echelon of the media industry is Citizen TV's Trevor Ombija.

From his calm poise in his neatly-cut suits to his onscreen bravado, the news anchor has undoubtedly become a staple in the industry.

For the majority, Ombija rose to fame during his tenure at NTV when he hosted prime-time news. However, some critics may argue that joining Citizen TV became the launching pad for his career.

Unknown to many, Ombija's career sprouted away from the newsroom. According to his LinkedIn, he first worked as a store clerk at a courier services company.

The journalist was tasked with the maintenance of records that were subject to verification during stock-taking periods.

Ombija worked at the company for three years and two months (December 2006 to January 2010) before exiting for greener pastures.

One month later, he became an assistant sea exports coordinator at a transport and logistics company.

The news anchor was part of a team that exported finished goods from Nairobi to Mombasa Port, the Horn of Africa and Indian Ocean markets such as Somalia, Somali land, Djibouti, Comoros, Mauritius and Ethiopia.

Ombija worked at the company for over a year, from February 2010 to April 2011, before his media breakthrough.

He came into the media limelight in May 2012 when he took the role of assignment desk editor at CCTV-Africa.

After amassing one year, he joined Nation Media Group as a news presenter but quit in November 2018 for Citizen TV.

Ombija currently hosts the weekly segments; Monday Report and Daybreak
