Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) opened the Kibra- Southern Bypass Interchange linking Lang'ata and Ngong roads.

The 2-kilometre bypass that cost Ksh1.15 billion was meant to reduce the travel time from Ngong Road to Lang'ata Road to five minutes.

Speaking during the commissioning on Tuesday, October 18, KURA Deputy Director Emdelina Eustas noted that the link road would save time for commuters.

"The travel time has greatly reduced within five minutes you have already connected to the two roads. It has also spurred development in the area," she stated.

"The community can also comfortably traverse the area as we have provided features like walkways and streets lights," she added.

Its Features

The new bypass has special features to improve users' experience while on the 2-kilometre stretch.

Kibra - Southern bypass interchange was designed to be a dual carriageway with service lanes and underpasses. It also has overpasses, bus bays, bridges and pedestrian bridges and footpaths.

The four-lane, dual carriageway road is 7.5 meters wide with 2 meters of verges between the curb and the open side drains.

The road also has slip roads linking to the Southern Bypass interchange, acceleration and deceleration lanes.

To improve the security and safety of motorists, the road was fitted with streetlights and guard rails.

The works on the road commenced in September 2020 despite resistance, following evictions that paved way for the project.

Together with the T-Mall flyover and Nairobi Expressway, the road is expected eases traffic on major routes within the city.

There are also plans to install smart CCTV cameras to help in monitor movements within the city.
