Education Cabinet Secretary nominee, Ezekiel Machogu, faulted the lack of father figures in some families as the leading contributor to rampant indiscipline cases witnessed in schools.

Machogu traced the alarming cases of unruly students to the lack of role models and mentors in the family setup.

Appearing before the National Assembly committee on Friday, October 21, Machogu reiterated that Kenya is a patriarchal society.

"The father figure is so important and critical in the family. Unfortunately, in some setups, there is negligence, abscondment, and absence, and the boy child does not have anyone to mentor him or a role model.

"These are some of the factors leading to indiscipline," Machogu explained.

According to Machogu, the father figure and family plays a critical role in the overall upbringing of a child.

He added that the age at which children join criminal activities, drug & substance abuse, and also drop out of school should be managed.

"Some of these things require joined effort from the school and the parents," the nominee told the committee.

His response followed a question from one of the members of the committee who asked him to detail the measures he would take to curb indiscipline.

The committee additionally highlighted the burning of boarding schools, especially in institutions located in urban areas.

Subsequently, Machogu suggested introducing counselling services within the school to deal with chaos in schools.

Outgoing Education CS George Magoha pushed for parents to foot the bill in an instance where a school was burnt.

"If you are mad, why don't you start by burning the house of your father? We don't play such games," Magoha dared rogue students.
