Update: WhatsApp resumed services after a one-hour outage that made international headlines.

A Meta spokesman who spoke to Agence France-Presse (AFP) affirmed that they had taken note of the outage and were working round the clock to resolve the issue.

The outage began at 10 am before the application completely crashed thirty minutes later.

WhatsApp, an instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is down.

According to a spot check by Kenyans.co.ke, messages sent to WhatsApp groups were left hanging, while texts sent to individuals left a single tick.

At the time of publishing this article on Tuesday, October 25, Meta had not released a statement on the issue.

Down Detector, an online site that provides a real-time overview of issues and outages with all kinds of social media services, noted that 84 per cent of complaints raised were about the inability to send and receive messages.

The issues filed peaked between 10 am and 10.30 am when WhatsApp completely crashed

12 per cent of the complaints were on the app not working efficiently, while three per cent was on WhatsApp web not linking well with the app.

A section of Kenyans online raised concerns about the services, highlighting that the issue began with WhatsApp groups.

"What's the issue with WhatApp groups today? Messages not going through and all," one Martin Wachira tweeted.

"You only understand the value of things when you don’t have them? Like the value of WhatsApp, we understand now that Whatsapp down is happening again!" a user with the pseudonym 'The great Indian Ramu' added.

"WhatsApp currently experiencing a technical hitch. Users are not able to send texts to #WhatsappGroups. Messages to other users also display only one tick as opposed to normal two blue ticks," Ouko Osoro added.

Recently, several Meta's Facebook users complained about losing most of their followers on the social media platform.

The situation was felt across the globe as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also shed over 119 million followers, bringing down his follower count to 9,000.

Meta resolved the situation a week later, as users regained their original follower count.
