Azimio la Umoja nominated senator, Crystal Asige, sued boys band Sauti Sol seeking compensation over a breach of contract.

Asige, who was fronted by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for the Senate seat, told the court to direct the artists to publicise the money they received from four hit songs she was featured in.

Further, she wants the group to compensate her for the hits, Lenga, Extravaganza, Ukiwa Mbali, Intro and Favourite Song.

Sol Generation Records Limited and musicians Polycarp Otieno, Willis Chimano, Bien-Aime Baraza and Delvin Mudigi were enjoined in the case.

"While under the first defendant’s record label, the plaintiff co-composed and performed on the widely known recordings Extravaganza and Ukiwa Mbali together with the second to fifth defendants, and her then label mates, professionally known as Bensoul, Nviiri the Story Teller and the group Kaskazini in 2019 and her contribution was credited as such," she claimed.

The aggrieved lawmaker argued that one of her compositions was released without her consent and thus wants the group to furnish the court with all licensing information on the mentioned songs

"Additionally, the plaintiff’s original composition was taken from her and recorded as the sound recording titled Intro and featured in the second to the fifth defendant’s latest studio album titled Midnight Train without the plaintiff’s knowledge or consent and released in June 2020 on the worldwide digital streaming platforms and social media and she was accredited as co-author of said song," her advocates added.

"The plaintiff communicated her reservations on the aforementioned agreement with the first defendant and requested to discuss and negotiate the particulars," she stated.

In the suit, Asige argued that she was approached to join the group to write and produce songs but lost all her rights despite contributing to the composition of several hit songs after their fallout.

Asige left the group in 2020 after a short stint. Her exit was marred with controversies, with the senator claiming that she was kicked out illegally.

The group refuted the allegations insisting that the vocalist failed to honour the terms of the agreement.

Sauti Sol had not responded to Asige's suit by the time of this publication.
