Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tickled President William Ruto as he confused Kenya with Senegal during a joint press briefing in Nairobi.
In his address at State House, on Wednesday, October 26, Sanchez referred to Kenya as Senegal twice.
"We have many areas we can work together to strengthen our bilateral ties. Besides being known for soccer, Spain has other areas we can work together with Senegal in order to face the common challenges," he stated.
"I am very honoured to be among the first international leaders to be visiting you as the president of Senegal," added the Prime Minister.
However, the president was heard in the background correcting the Prime Minister by uttering "Kenya".
Subsequently, the Prime Minister apologised to the Head of State before proceeding with his speech.
Pedro received a warm welcome by Ruto who stated he is looking forward to working and learning from the European nation.
Notably, the PM also amazed Kenyans by delivering a huge chunk of his speech in Spanish without a translator.
"I am looking forward to working with you and the ministers. I bring a delegation of established Spanish companies in Kenya that are looking forward to the expansion," he said conclusively.
President Ruto noted Kenya is keen on securing opportunities for its citizens through bilateral ties with Spain and
"Kenya is going to be a dependable ally to Kenya. As a gateway to the continent, we will work together so Spain can find its way into Africa," he stated.
"I commend for you inviting Kenya to the alliance against desertification that Spain is building with Senegal we have already undertaken as a country the policy direction that we are going to plant 10 billion trees in the next ten years,” Ruto added.
