The protracted stand-off between Meru governor, Kawira Mwangaza, and county assembly members took a new twist after the lawmakers demanded a public apology.

The MCAs also insisted on involving all elected members of parliament (MPs) and the senators in mediation before honouring calls for a truce made by the governor.

Mwangaza was accused of reprimanding the MCAs, publicly shaming them, disregarding the county assembly and refusing to listen to their grievances.

Their demands came hours after the governor invited the MCAs to a round table to resolve the discord in the running of Meru County's affairs.

According to the Speaker of the Meru County Assembly Ayub Bundi, the MCAs claimed that Meru MPs were part of the feud, owing to their dedicated efforts to reconcile the county government officials.

"When we reported back to members, they maintained that the reconciliation meeting must include Meru members of Parliament,” the speaker stated.

In a letter dated October 31, the governor asserted her intention to honour her promise to actualize the Ward Development Fund, which she stated was at the centre of the wrangle.

Governor Mwangaza invited the area Senator Kathuri Murungi and all Meru MPs for a meeting slated for November 3 at her official residence.

"Key among the causes of these misunderstandings is the Ward Fund, an issue that was captured in my maiden County Assembly opening speech on Wednesday, 19, and even now.

"I am ready to discuss it with the Honourable Members of the County Assembly and its management and come up with a workable solution,” she stated.

The move follows persistent calls from various quarters urging the two parties to resolve the stalemate, which attracted the entire nation's attention.

Anne Waiguru, the Chairperson of the Council of Governorson Friday, October 28, engaged the MCAs and the governor in a meeting to discuss the widening row.
