National Assembly speaker, Moses Wetangula, reiterated his support for the Ford Kenya party in the Bungoma senatorial by-election.

Speaking during an interview on November 1, Wetangula acknowledged that President William Ruto's party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), had a candidate in the race but maintained that the county was Ford Kenya's stronghold.

The former area senator expressed confidence that his party would carry the day in the by-elections scheduled for December 8.

Wetangula also claimed that some UDA legislators threw their weight behind the Ford Kenya party candidate.

"Bungoma is the stronghold of Ford Kenya, and I have been elected to the party over the years. As a party, we are standing behind our party candidate, Wafula Wakoli.

"He is being supported by the MPs, including Didmus Barasa (Kimilili). That is who I support," he stated.

Earlier, Wetangula had indicated that the team would settle on one candidate for the Kenya Kwanza faction.

"I want to assure you that between William Ruto and me, we will definitely be able to settle on one individual to run for the seat.

"We know that Bungoma is our forte, and we shall defend it even in the coalition," he stated, adding that his party would participate in the campaigns to ensure their candidate clinches the seat.

Bungoma senatorial seat was declared vacant after Wetangula was elected as National Assembly speaker.

Splinter groups, later on, emerged in Kenya Kwanza with reports claiming that Ford Kenya leaders demanded UDA to opt out of the race.

UDA fronted Ruto's longtime ally and immediate former Bumula MP, Moses Mabonga.
