Kenyans are set to dig deeper into their pockets to fund the implementation of the Least Cost Power Development Plan (LCPDP)'s Ksh354 billion projects by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) by 2041.

The plan which seeks to implement the most affordable way to tap and circulate electricity countrywide emphasizes on geothermal as its flagship project towards power provision.

Speaking during the launch of the plan on Wednesday, November 3, EPRA's Director General Daniel Kiptoo said that the plan envisages installing 8,205 MW by the end of the 2041 planning period.

This announcement came even as more Kenyans were calling for the need to open up the sector and end the Kenya Power monopoly.

The implementation of the plan will see millions of Kenyans enjoy low cost power by the beginning of the 2041 planning period.

“The overall cost of the system is projected to increase from $1.17 billion (Sh142 billion) in 2022 to $2.91 billion (Sh353.6 billion) in 2041,” said Kiptoo.

Furthermore, the EPRA head said that transmission planning and related infrastructure will continue to require heavy investment.

The authority's medium term plan aims to expand the network by 6,218 km in circuit length and 12,037 MVA in substation capacity at a total investment cost of KES 388.6 billion.

The EPRA boss also indicated that in the long-term, the circuit length of transmission lines are projected to increase by 12,293km while the substation capacity will be increased by 18,496 MVA  at a total investment cost of KES 688.8 billion.

Kenya’s power industry generation and transmission system planning is undertaken on the basis of a 20 year rolling LCPDP.

The LCPDP is updated every year.
