Italians built Kenya's smallest church, also known as the Travelers' Chapel, located along the Mai Mahiu-Naivasha highway in Nakuru in 1942 during World War II.

Over the years, the small architectural masterpiece measuring approximately 15 by 8 feet has been a key tourist attraction for travellers using the route.

The church is also among the top three smallest churches in the world, with three small wooden benches on each side and an altar at the end.

It is decorated by multicoloured stained glass windows.

Speaking to CGTN's Enock Sikolia, the church's caretaker Hannah Nyakio detailed the history of the place of worship

"It was built by Italian who had been colonized by the British to build this road during World War II. The woman who designed this road was shot here, and the Italians wanted to mark the spot," she recounted.

"I think they used strong materials to build the church that is why it is still standing," she added.

The pentagon-shaped church is decorated with Latin inscriptions, ancient sculptures, murals, and drawings. Its look has remained unchanged over the years to preserve its history.

She noted that the religious masterpiece receives many tourists daily as they use the route. Some even use it as a venue for weddings and photo shoots

Nyakio also explained the meaning of the church's ancient paintings, scribblings, and sculptures. The three steps at the entrance represent the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit).

The small church has a maximum capacity of 12 people at a time. According to Nyakio, it symbolises the twelve disciples of Jesus.

Extra attendees are forced to carry their seats.

"The seats were not here initially but were put in place after the Italians came back in 1985. It accommodates people from all religions," she explained.

Nyakio, who has worked as the caretaker for over 20 years, noted the Italians hold an annual worship service at the church on January 1.
