Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua praised an officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who refused to frame Water Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome and Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Ndindi Nyoro.
Speaking on Sunday, November 6 during a service at the AIPCA Church Kenol, Murang'a county, Gachagua recounted that the top officer was instructed to frame Wahome and Nyoro over the murder of two men in Murang'a county.
The youths died following the skirmishes after a teargas canister was lobbed at a church where Kenya Kwanza leaders were scheduled to attend the service.
He lauded the top DCI officer for maintaining high standards of integrity amid pressure and coercion by the previous regime.
"A very independent officer in DCI conducted investigations during which he established that the two had nothing to do with it. He gathered sufficient to charge an influential individual but was asked to drop the case.
"That is the way we want our officers to work, professionally and independently," Gachagua remarked.
The DP commended the officer at a time when the government has sustained attacks on DCI, implementing sweeping changes, including the disbandment of the Special Services Unit - SSU and arraignment of its members.
Gachagua further lauded Azimio party leader Raila Odinga for accepting that he was in the opposition after welcoming former Defence CS Eugene Wamalawa to the opposition.
However, he launched a thinly-veiled attack on Odinga, faulting him for the extra-judicial killings orchestrated by the now-suspended Special Service Unit (SSU).
"If he had not left the opposition to mix up the government, he would have stopped extra-judicial killings, state capture, conflict of interest, and looting of public offers would not have taken place," the DP stated.
Gachagua assured the people of Kandara that he would not interfere with the upcoming by-election following Alice Wahome's appointment as Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Water Cabinet Secretary.
He noted that neither he nor Ruto would hand-pick a leader for them but requested them to retain the seat within the ruling party, UDA.
