Motorists have petitioned the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to look into the Kirigiti junction stretch along Kiambu Road which has become a black spot.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, November 8, they decried the number of accidents that have happened at the spot with motorists joining the road at the intersection being the most vulnerable.

The motorists argued that the road is not only narrow but the junction is located at a dangerous spot. Consequently, they demanded that KeNHA re-design the section of the road.

"KeNHA should create an overpass so that those proceeding to Kiambu use the top deck to allow free movement of those making the turn to Kirigiti or joining in to do so freely," one resident stated.

The push to have their concerns addressed with urgency came a day after a 33-seater matatu collided head-on with a Toyota Prado which was heading to Kirigiti at the black spot.

The mini-bus overturned on impact. Several passengers escaped unharmed while 11 passengers who sustained injuries were rushed to the Kiambu Level V hospital for treatment.

Notably, the driver in the personal car was also injured. While witnesses claimed that the accident could have been avoided, they maintained that the issue was with the design of the road.

The calls to have Kiambu Road redesigned date back to  2021, when motorists called on the government to expand the road following heavy traffic that was being expressed then.

In November 2021, KeNHA revealed that in a bid to decongest the stretch, it would expand it to a dual carriage.

However, the proposal is yet to be approved before any development. Among the proposals was to have loop roads within townships or market centres.

Several footbridges would be erected along some sections of the road to prevent pedestrian accidents along the 25-kilometre stretch that starts in Pangani.
