Kelvin Nyakundi, an anchor at KTN News, on Sunday, November 13, opened up about his life working in media and being a member of a music group.

Nyakundi belongs to the Shofar music group, consisting of 150 members that began in 2013. He is the group's organizing secretary and he is involved in planning of schedules including where and when the group will perform.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Nyakundi, stated that since his job is a demanding, he finds it hard balancing the two roles which are part of his life.

“It is not easy. We meet for practice on Saturdays and Sundays and these play as my off days too hence making it easy for me. At times am supposed to meet for practice on Friday evening and get held up at work, leaving so late and tired,” he explained.

However, this also robs him of time as he is held up all seven days in a week hence lacking time to even visit his family.

The most challenging moment he encountered was during the elections period when he had no off days as is the nature of media.

“Elections time was so hard but I always create time to cover up for the practicing moment I have missed,” he expounded.

On November 13, part of the group performed on Citizen TV's Rauka show, hosted by celebrated media personality Joyce Omondi. In his introduction, Nyakundi stated that he sings tenor one. However, it was not easy for him, because of the nature of his job and how media in Kenya works.

“I reminded our group leader of the nature of my job and he confirmed to be aware but since I am part of the group I had to appear,” he stated.

Nyakundi wanted to stay behind the camera but this would have resulted in a voice imbalance in the group since they had been arranged strategically.

He described singing as part of his life as he began singing at a young age in Sunday schools years back.

“I was part of the singing games and I remember I was the only male among all the girls though another boy joined us later on,’ he noted.

He later joined the school choir in primary and secondary school and university. He actively participated in music and drama festivals.

While in high school, he was the leader of morning devotions. He was also part of the church choir back at home and would continue participating during school holidays.

The budding business journalist who formerly worked at Metropol TV, described Shofar as a great participant in his career as it helps him soothe his mind after work.

At KTN, Nyakundi, who has a degree in broadcast journalism, anchors and reports business news. He also hosts some segments like News at One and Africa Speaks.

An alumnus of Multimedia University, he also worked a news anchor for Switch TV and Fanaka Digital.
