Nairobi citizens have been robbed of their valuables while others have been stabbed and left nursing wounds as crime surged in the past weeks.
One would have thought that only ordinary Kenyans have suffered under these acts of city hoodlums. However, legislators and prominent individuals, too, fell prey to the thugs.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei
Nandi Senator Cherargei, on Tuesday, November 15, lamented losing his vehicle's side mirror while in traffic along Valley Road.
"A fortnight ago, I lost the left-side mirror of my car while stuck in traffic along Valley Road. It was removed forcefully by a thug.
"Nairobi is now a crime city and a gangs haven. The security lapse across the nation must be addressed immediately by re-organisation of the security sector," he tweeted.
The MP from Nyandarua was carjacked in Nairobi on Sunday evening, October 2.
A police report filed at the Karen Police Station indicates that the lawmaker was heading home from a city joint.
During their attack, the MP was blindfolded by the trio, who took control of the vehicle and drove towards the Karen upmarket.
The kidnappers reportedly demanded ATM and cash from their victim.
Upon searching through the vehicle, the robbers stumbled on Ksh700,000 stashed beneath the driver's seat.
KBC presenter Shiksha Arora
Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) presenter Shiksha Arora was mugged by unknown assailants while in traffic at Globe roundabout.
Arora claimed that the incident occurred around 5 pm while she was headed to Serena Hotel to attend the launch of KBC.
A man, she claimed, tapped one of her side mirrors and bent it backwards.
As she rolled down her window to try and fix the mirror, another man started banging loudly on the front passenger seat window.
“Clearly, the guy banging at the passenger window was trying to distract me so that the third guy slides his hand through my window and unlocks my car,” stated Arora.
The mugger demanded her purse and mobile phone.
Franklin Wallah
In 2019, the K24 TV reporter was mugged outside a police station in Nairobi County by a gang riding on a motorbike along the Kangundo Road junction.
Wallah took to social media to share his experience of the robbery that saw him lose his mobile phone.
“Yesterday at around 4 pm a group of boys on a motorbike attacked and robbed me along Outering/Kangundo Road Junction. They managed to snatch my phone away but I survived the mugging," the journalist who was on duty recalled.
Nairobi Hotspots
Some streets in Nairobi have gained notoriety for daylight muggings, forcing the government to deploy General Service Unit (GSU) and Rapid Deployment Unit.
Areas highlighted as high-risk within the Kenyan capital included Tom Mboya Avenue's intersection with Kenneth Matiba Road (former Accra road) Bomb blast area, Aga khan Walk, Koja Stage and its environs, the space between Hilton Hotel and International Life House (Simba Street).
