President William Ruto deployed officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) to tackle the rising cases of insecurity in Nairobi.

In a despatch from the Cabinet dated Tuesday, November 15, cabinet secretaries approved the stationing of the officers as a reinforcement to the security agents patrolling the city.

This follows the spate of reported mugging and armed robbery cases, especially in the central business district (CBD).

"Cabinet sanctioned swift and decisive action to deal with all those perpetrating crimes with the deployment of additional specialized police units drawn from the GSU and RDU," the despatch read in part.

In addition, the CS resolved to upscale security surveillance to deter crime. A  similar team was also installed to restore peace in the North Rift.

Ruto's cabinet requested members of the public to be forthcoming with information to aid the security agents in safeguarding the nation.

The government implemented measures to appropriately address drug trafficking in the country, reinforcing security across its borders.

"Cabinet approved the reinstatement of the multi-agency co-ordination between Kenya's security organs and operators at all points of entry I detect and prevent trafficking in Narcotics and other psychotropic substances," the statement read in part.

The new directives came amid concerns by the public over increased crime which left victims injured or dead in extreme cases.

Consequently, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced changes in the Nairobi County Police Command, with Adamson Bungei taking over as the county police boss.

On November 15, the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, ordered robbers to surrender their firearms or face the full force of the law.
