A well-crafted scheme by a three-armed gang in Thika, Kiambu County, was foiled by detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following a crackdown on criminals across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 16, the DCI received a tip after the armed men attacked unsuspecting public members along Cascade Premier Prison Road.

Hot on their trails, the cops engaged in a fierce battle leading to one of the thugs getting shot in the neck.

"The thug who was part of a three-man gang attacking members of the public along Cascade Premier prison road was shot close to the jugular as he attempted to fend off the response by the gallant officers.

"His efforts came to naught when one of the officers opened fire in self defence, sending the thug sprawling on the ground metres away," read part of the statement.

The response by the police officers sent the two remaining thugs fleeing aboard a motorbike that lacked number plates. This prompted a chase between the officers and the duo.

The police waylaid one of the thugs, who was cornered and arrested, while the third suspect disembarked from the motorbike and disappeared in a stormwater culvert.

"One of the robbers was finally cornered and arrested while his accomplice disappeared in a stormwater culvert, briefly disrupting an incoherent chorus of croaking toads whose abode had just been rudely invaded.

"The thug outwitted our officers who gave him another chance to mend his ways and preach the good gospel, lest the fate that befell his departed partner in crime befalls him," read part of the statement.

Following the incident, two machetes, a homemade firearm and mobile phones, suspected to have been snatched from innocent victims, were recovered from the operation.

The motorbike was towed to Thika police station to be used as an exhibit in court.

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki recently announced police command changes and constituted a multi-agency team tasked with curbing insecurity

"We have already started taking measures already to deal with the emerging crime trend in Nairobi. In this regard, the command of the Nairobi city police has changed effective immediately," Kindiki stated.
