Residents of Ruai area in Nairobi can now have peaceful sleep after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shot and killed a gang leader who had been terrorising the neighbourhood.

A statement shared on Thursday, August 18 by the DCI showed that the ring leader identified as Paul Muriithi Naomi alias Muruthi was cornered by a police officer posing as a door-to-door hawker, popularly known as mare mare seller.

The detectives had received intelligence about the thug who had been on its most wanted list for months and traced him to his house in Ruai.

One of the detectives, while carrying plastics and other goods, approached the house while shouting 'mare mare' in an attempt to get audience with Muruthi.

The thug opened the door halfway and told off the officer warning him not to return to the house again.

"Moments later the detectives knocked, introduced themselves and requested for an audience with the thug. But he instead responded with fire, shooting at the officers from a window. A shootout then ensued as the detectives responded to the provocation with precision.

"Moments later, the thug was subdued and the sleuths gained entry to the house, where his lifeless body was sprawled on the floor," read the statement in part.

A Ceska pistol serial number B681256 loaded with four rounds of 9mm calibre was recovered, while 11 spent cartridges littered the scene.

Investigations into the incident showed  that Muruthi had robbed the firearm from a civilian licensed to own a gun about a week ago.

The civilian lost valuables worth north of Ksh500,000 during the robbery.

The incident is the latest in a series of security measures taken by the police to ensure gangs are repulsed during the election season.

In July, an operation mounted in Nakuru led to the arrest of several gang members accused of violently robbing and killing residents of the county.
