The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) provided an update on a stray elephant that was detected early Thursday morning, December 15, in Kiamunyi Estate, Nakuru county.
Videos which surfaced online revealed that the stray elephant roamed around the estate, causing fear among the members of the public who called on KWS to contain the situation.
However, a source from KWS confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the situation has been contained and that members of the public should rest easy.
The locals were advised to be vigilant and not interact with the wild animal.
"I can confirm that we were informed of the stray elephant in Kiamunyi Estate earlier today and our officers responded immediately.
"However, the elephant has been pushed back to the Menengai Crater and it is now far away from the public," an official from KWS revealed.
Kenyans online shared videos and photos of the elephant grazing in different areas of Kiamunyi estate, Nakuru county.
"Earlier today Elephant was captured roaming in Nakuru around Zaburi, Kiamunyi area residents are advised to observe vigilantly," Mugambi Amathi shared on Twitter.
"The Grand Winston Hotel can be seen in the background in this amateur video shared by an eyewitness," Patrick Kinyua shared on his Twitter.
"It came from Baraka via the Greenspace route, I saw it crossing the road to the farm opposite Grant Winston," Ruth Munoria wrote on her Facebook adding that she saw KWS officers guiding the elephant back to the Crater.
Cases of human-wildlife issues between wild animals and residents living near the Lake Nakuru National Park have been an issue in the recent past.
Local residents have called on KWS to ensure their safety by instituting measures to prevent the straying of wild animals to residential homes in the region.
