The holiday spirit is all about giving and what better way to spread some cheer than by giving back? This could be a small gesture like serving meals at a community event.

Here are some ideas on how you can volunteer during the holiday season and the importance of teaching your kids how to give back to the community.

Donate Clothing and other essentials

The Christmas frenzy especially for kids always comes with expectations and wishes; with most of them wishing for new shoes, clothes and toys.

It is during this period that parents face their kids and have to either purchase new clothes or toys in order to make their Christmas successful.

Considering the financial implications of such moves, you can help yourself out by teaching your children that Christmas is not just about receiving but also about giving.

Help them sort out and donate that shirt, trousers or shoe that they no longer put on, how about the excess food in your store?

You will not only be helping them clean out their outgrown clothes or toys they don’t play with anymore but also teaching them good values.

Offer to Babysit

Offer to help a single mother, a housewife or that new couple that just got their firstborn with their children so they can go out and enjoy a well-deserved break.

You could also have your friends come over to play with your kids which will be enjoyable for them too.

Host a Holiday Food Drive

Invite the neighbours to a holiday party and bring food items to donate to a local children's home.

You could decide to participate in the famous “chapati fest” activity where people gather to prepare chapatis and feed the less fortunate.

To make it interesting, you could create some decorations with the kids, pass out sweets and biscuits and have a blast.

Make a Holiday Meal For your Workers

Christmas provides an opportunity to show gratitude to those who play a key role in our day-to-day lives including domestic workers.

You can get them into the Christmas frenzy by baking some Christmas cookies or a holiday meal too.

Nothing slaps like holidays with strangers who become family at your house.

Host a Christmas Party for the Kids in Your Neighborhood

This can be a fun way to get all the kids together.

You may even consider turning the party into a volunteer activity by asking attendees to bring things to donate.
