Top Journalists Poached by Governors After Elections

After the August 9 General Election, various governors from across the country hired journalists to help them execute their mandates.

Among the journalist who landed new jobs with county governments included Citizen TV reporter Nicky Gitonga, NTV Swahili managing editor Salim Swaleh and Royal Media Services (RMS) radio programmes manager Charles Odhiambo.

Their Roles in County Governments

Nicky Gitonga

Nicky Gitonga was appointed Director of Communications and spokesperson for the Kwale County Government

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani tasked Gitonga with managing and directing the county's internal and external communications and supervising public relations staff.

Other roles included creating communication strategies and serving as the devolved unit's key spokesperson and media contact.

Salim Swaleh

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika picked Salim Swaleh from the newsroom to lead the Information and Communications Technology, ICT, e-Government and Public Communication docket.

Kihika settled on the veteran presenter to help her fulfil her mandate as the first-time governor of the newly-elevated city. 

Charles Odhiambo

Charles Odhiambo quit RMS after 17 years to join Governor Gladys Wanga's administration in Homa Bay county. 

Odhiambo joined Homa Bay County as the chief of staff in governor Wanga's office.

The former Ramogi FM presenter joined RMS in March 2005 and grew through the ranks over the years. 

Apart from being the programmes manager, he was also the in-charge of the Western Kenya cluster stations Mulembe FM, Ramogi FM, and Vuuka FM, among others.

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki seconded Kennedy Murithi, NTV reporter, to the political advisor role in his government.

The second-term governor tapped into his expertise to help him deliver his mandate without political interference.

Karen Karimi Knaust

Karen Knaust was appointed director of communications at the Kilifi County Government.

Before her appointment, she was a presenter on TV47.

Governor Gideon Mung'aro appointed the former K24 presenter to help Kilifi county make relevant communication and deliver his campaign promises.
