Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday, December 21, pleaded with his boss William Ruto to grant him a chance to further his education.

Speaking during the official opening of the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong, Kajiado County, Gachagua explained how he is often left confused during meetings as one of his senior colleagues is a professor.

"Your Excellency, my education is still down. You will grant me permission when my work has decreased so that I can further my education. Also one of my senior colleagues is a professor. Sometimes I get confused during meetings,” he noted.

Comparing his education to that of the Head of State, Gachagua admitted that he faces a lot of challenges working with him due to a gap in their academic qualifications.

“Based on the work the President has given me, my education level is really low. I have one degree yet the President has three making my job hard," he stated.

The second in command also urged the police officers to further their studies.

“Make sure you further your studies even if there will be no increase in pay -  which is often influenced by achieving higher education. You will never go wrong with good education,” he added.

In his address, the DP also implored the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to impact good leadership to the officers.

He argued that the officers are always a laughing stock in the country due to their low professionalism.

“Kenyans are always laughing at our officers especially when they are trying to talk about a crime scene because they do it in an embarrassing manner.

"We are not asking police officers to misuse the firearms but they need to protect themselves against armed criminals before they protect us," he noted.

Ruto, on the other hand, revealed that the opening of the institution was a dream come true since he had worked on the proposal during his tenure as Deputy President

“These 100 acres being used for police leadership, we had recommended it about 20 years ago. It looked unreasonable at that time but now, with the expansion of the police force, it will be fully used,” he noted.
