5 News Stories That Shook the Nation in 2022

As we know, news is dynamic and thus a lot can happen within a 365-day period. The country was treated to news pieces that formed nationwide debate. 

Kenyans.co.ke made a list of eight compelling stories that made headlines: 

IEBC scuffle and the Cherera Four

During the announcement of the presidential results on August 15, 2022, the Bomas of Kenya was the centre of attention as chaos broke out, forcing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati to be whisked away to safety.

This is after a section of politicians blocked the IEBC chair from announcing the results, with gadgets and equipment being thrown at the podium.  

At the same time, four other commissioners, including former Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyangaya, and Irene Masit conducted a parallel press conference to dispute the results.

 The announcement was delayed from 3pm to 6pm, as Kenyans waited anxiously for the outcome. 

The Kasarani 4 

In June 2022, the body of popular blogger, Frank Obegi was discovered in Kijabe forest, alongside three other mutilated bodies. 

According to Obegi’s family, the blogger had been missing for a week before his body was found. 

Obegi had gone for days without posting online and his accounts had been deleted under unclear circumstances. 

Police officers promised to expedite investigations to capture the perpetrators but to date, the killers are yet to be apprehended. 

Mavoko Case 

After six years of anguish and pain for the family of deceased lawyer Willie Kimani, the case was finally closed on July 22, 2022. 

Justice Jesssie Lessit ruled that the three police officers accused of killing the lawyer, his client Josephat Mwendwa and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri, were found guilty of murder. 

The judge noted that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the three suspects were responsible for the crime. 

Uhuru handing over power peacefully 

On September 13, 2022, former president Uhuru Kenyatta handed over the instruments of power to the then President-elect William Ruto as a sign of the completion of the transition process. 

The former President had promised to hand over the presidency smiling despite supporting Ruto's rival and Azimio leader, Raila Odinga. 

During the ceremony, Uhuru inspected the parade by the Kenya Defence Forces for the final time and was accorded a 21-gun salute. 

During the ceremony, Ruto rewarded Uhuru's peace initiatives and tasked him to continue to chair missions across the East African region. 

River Nithi tragedy

A Modern Coast bus, on July 24, 2022, plunged at Nithi bridge, a notorious blackspot along the Meru-Nairobi highway. 

Reports indicated that the bus driver veered off the bridge after he lost control of the 45-seater PSV, as it rolled about 40 metres downhill before stopping beside the Nithi River. 

The accident claimed 35 lives, with witnesses claiming that the bus developed brake failure owing to the fact that it was moving at a high speed. 

Nithi bridge has been labelled a blackspot after several fatal accidents have occurred in the past four years.
