Several Injured in Multiple Car Crash Along Nairobi-Naivasha Highway

Several people on Thursday, December 29, escaped death after a Western-bound Climax bus was involved in a multiple-car crash along the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway.

The accident involved 5 vehicles; a bus, a 14-seater matatu registered under 2 NK shuttle, a Probox, a Toyota Vitz and another car. 

According to a witness who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, the overspeeding Probox was overtaking the Vitz when the accident happened.

He affirmed that the Climax bus and the 2NK matatu were en route to Naivasha from Nairobi while the Probox and the Vitz were heading to Nairobi. 

In videos shared online, bystanders and onlookers rushed to the scene as the Probox toppled over the matatu. 

Police officers arrived in time to aid in the evacuation of passengers from the vehicles. 

No death was reported by the time of this publication.

This is the latest in a string of accidents that have punctuated the festive season across the country. 

Earlier on in the day, one person was reported dead after a tipper truck collided with a pick-up truck in Murang'a County. 

On Wednesday, December 28, a pedestrian died after a Modern Coast bus lost control before plunging into a river in Kisii Town. 

The accidents occurred despite efforts by the government to sensitize motorists on the need to observe traffic rules during the festive season. 

At the onset of the festive season, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and his Interior counterpart Kithure Kindiki announced a crackdown on motorists alongside a raft of measures in a bid to stem the number of accidents that had hit alarming numbers. 

 According to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the number of fatalities from accidents in 2022 was 4432 - an increase from 4271 registered in 2021.
