Modern Coast to Continue Operations on Select Routes Despite Ban

Modern Coast Express Limited announced that it will continue operations on select routes despite the government revoking its operating license.

The bus company through a statement released on December 31, vowed to continue regional routes and only halt domestic routes.

Only three routes have been affected by the ban according to the bus company.

“Following the suspension of our operations by the Ministry of Road and Transport, the company has halted three routes plied in the country.”

“The Mombasa – Highway, Nairobi – Malindi and Nairobi – Upcountry routes remain closed until further notice,” the company announced in a statement.

The company stated that the operational ban will not affect regional trips.

“Modern Coast will continue operating on; Nairobi – Kampala, Nairobi – Kigali and Nairobi Bujumbura routes,” the statement read in part.

The company promised to facilitate travel to all stranded passengers who had earlier booked its domestic routes.

In addition, the firm announced that all their offices would remain open countrywide and that parcel delivery and cross-border booking would continue uninterrupted.

Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen suspended Modern Coast’s license on December 30, after several of its buses were involved in fatal accidents.

“I have directed National Transport and Safety Authority to suspend all operations of Modern Coast bus company with immediate effect,” the CS announced in a statement.

The December 30 suspension was the third for the bus company in just 3 years having suffered similar suspensions in 2019 and July 2022.
