Fresh details in the disappearance case of Maureen Gitau, a 24-year-old Kenyan woman in the United Kingdom, introduced a new twist.

This was after a middle-aged man was arrested on Friday, December 30, on suspicion of murdering the woman who disappeared without a trace.

Detectives in the United Kingdom confirmed that they treated the 54-year-old man as the main suspect in the case.

According to the police, Gitau was likely to have been fatally injured, a decision they reached despite not retrieving the body.

The Metropolitan Police underlined that the 54-year-old, of Nightingale Place, Woolwich, has been charged with her murder.

"This arrest is a significant development in what is now being treated as a murder investigation," Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn told the press.

"Whilst we have not located Maureen's body we have reason to believe she has come to serious harm and has likely been killed. Maureen's family have been informed and they will be supported by specialist officers," Blackburn added.

The suspect was later charged with the murder of the missing woman from south-east London on Monday, January, 2.

Gitau was reported missing on December 10, having last been seen five days earlier as she left her home in Evelyn Street, Deptford.

Her family filed a report with the police a few days later, prompting the police to action.

Police urged anyone with information on Gitau to call 101 or reach out to the family.
