Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja on Tuesday, January 3 distanced himself from police harassment drawing mixed reactions from a section of Kenyans.

The issue of harassment within the Central Business District (CBD) was raised by one of Nairobi's residents who questioned why the governor was not taking action.

He claimed that some officers had been asking for bribes after arresting innocent Kenyans.

“Police officers based at Central police station have been arresting us having committed no offense. They arrest anyone they find including the trolley guys and matatu conductors.

They then demand Ksh5,000. Did we really make a mistake voting for you?” Alexis Sanchez questioned.

In response, Sakaja explained that the issue was not under his control.

“Police is under the national government,” the governor responded.

His response however was not taken lightly by a section of Kenyans on social media who attacked the county boss.

“Sakaja, however much it's true, you are supposed to be their advocate especially when they feel oppressed. That's leadership. Those complaining are Nairobi electorates and city residents and not criminals,” stated Martin Kandagi.

“You are also part of that National government. Do something to help the Nairobians please,” Silas Kamande pleaded with the governor.

Others recalled former Governor Mike Sonko's days when he would take action immediately.

“He has not responded in a good way since he is also in authority. What is he for if he cannot help us, if it was in the tenure of Mike Sonko we would have received immediate help,” Joseph Waweru uttered.

Officers were deployed in CBD by President William Ruto after a rise in insecurity cases.

In a despatch from the Cabinet dated Tuesday, November 15, 2022, the State approved the deployment of the officers to beef up security in the capital city.
