President William Ruto on Friday, November 11, directed the National Police Service to address the recent surge of mugging cases in Nairobi.
Ruto who spoke during a meeting with the new Inspector General of police Japhet Koome at State House noted that the NPS is well-resourced and independent to execute their mandate.
In addition, the president ordered the police service to combat the perennial problem of cattle rustling and banditry in parts of the country.
“Muggings, cattle rustling or other cases of insecurity must stop,” he said
The President further assured the police of his resolve to ensure a professional and independent service.
Ruto noted that professionalism, coupled with the necessary resources availed to the police, would work boost the operations of the police in the task of ensuring law and order in the country.
In addition, the President urged the new police boss to uphold the integrity and the rule of law in the service.
He warned against nepotism and tribalism in the process of promotion of officers within the department.
"We want a professional police service; the sticky issues of ethnicity, nepotism or cronyism should no longer exist,” he noted.
On his part, the National Police Service Commission Chairman Eliud Kinuthia welcomed the changes in the service and affirmed his commitment to executing his mandate.
“We commit not to fail our country since we have resources to deliver,” stated Kinuthia.
Also in attendance were Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kindiki Kithure, Deputy IG Noor Gabow and members of the National Police Service Commission.
Earlier in the day, Koome reiterated his dedication to arresting the surging criminal activities in the country during his swearing-in.
