Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga, on Friday, January 6, sought to allay fears that the party was facing a mass exodus staged by its membership.

Raila responded to media reports that key stakeholders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, were forcing their way out

According to Raila, Azimio was properly constituted, and former President Uhuru Kenyatta remained the rightful chairman of the council.

He also clarified that governors were legally bound to work closely with President William Ruto.

"It's important for people to distinguish between the role of the county and national government without creating a misunderstanding," Raila warned.

He, however, asked governors to play their roles effectively in the counties and Azimio and warned the head of state against misconstruing the good gesture by his coalition.

"When a governor says that I will work closely with the national government, that doesn't mean that he or she has defected from Azimio," Raila explained.

"Azimio allied counties will receive part of the national cake whether President William Ruto likes it or not," Raila reaffirmed.

He argued that revenue allocations to county governments were well guaranteed within the law, and no governor should be begging for a friendship with the president.

On December 11, 2022, Jubilee party vice chair David Murathe revealed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was set to resign as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance Chairman.

Murathe told the press that Uhuru's resignation would allow him to focus on the peace initiative within East Africa.

“We will be meeting very soon where he will formally resign as the chairman of the Azimio council.

"Obviously, you cannot have two drivers steering a bus. This vehicle called Azimio now has one driver and that driver is Jakom (Mr Odinga),” Murathe claimed.
