Azimio party leader Raila Odinga rubbished claims by President William Ruto that there was an attempt to overthrow the will of the people after he won the August 9 election.
Speaking in Mombasa County on Sunday, January 8, Raila termed Ruto as delusional stating that the government would have not overthrown itself since he had not yet ascended to office.
He added that in any case, nothing would have stopped his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta from toppling him.
"That is a fallacy. How could the government have done a coup against itself? If they wanted to, who would have prevented them from doing so?" he posed.
Odinga intimated that Uhuru had from the onset made it clear that he wanted a peaceful election which his government would steer clear from.
During a joint press interview on January 4, Ruto claimed that there were plans for a state capture and that they even involved the military that he now leads.
"The events of August 15 were horrible because even the military, a sacred institution had been roped into the scheme to sabotage the will of the people of Kenya," the President stated.
Odinga also addressed claims that the Azimio chair planned to ditch the coalition and the rift between the party's principals.
"I was with him yesterday and spoke to him this morning. He has not given me the impression that he wants to quit Azimio," he clarified.
The Azimio leader dismissed assumptions of tension within the opposition over a push to have him hand over the barton to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
"We work together very closely with Kalonzo, Uhuru, and Karua. There is nothing like a power struggle within Azimio, everything will be done very smoothly," he added.
Kalonzo had made clear his intentions of contesting for the country's top seat in 2027.
