Social media was awash on Saturday night, January 14, with photos of a mangled car pictured in South C area near Bellevue along Mombasa Road.

Initial reports speculated that the vehicle fell from the Nairobi Expressway onto the lower road- potentially endangering the lives of Mombasa road users.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Jeanne May, Head of Public Relations of the Nairobi Expressway, dismissed the reports and affirmed that the car was involved in an accident along Mombasa road.

"The car in question was involved in an accident along Mombasa road and did not fall from the Nairobi Expressway," she stated.

According to videos circulated online, the vehicle had overturned at the side of the road, causing a traffic snarl-up.

In addition, bystanders milled around the scene of the incident in a bid to get a glimpse of the situation and possibly rescue the victims that could have been trapped in the wreckage.

At the time of publishing this article, no fatalities were confirmed as a result of the accident.

"I have always shuddered at the possibility of this. It does happen! Every time I navigate Allsopps / GSU corner, I imagine a car flying over and falling on Thika Superhighway," a comment from Facebook user Catherine Riungu.

"This road was meant for those hurrying for appointments, jobs, hospitals not drunkards and others," a post from Paul Kariuki read.

A section of online users was, however, quick to point out the misinformation from the reports.

" Stop spreading stupid lies. The black Mazda was knocked on the side by a minibus that was being driven carelessly at capital center mall causing it to overturn," read a tweet from a user identified as Allan.

Moja Expressway, the company tasked with operating the Nairobi Expressway, has in the past instituted measures to enable motorists to adhere to traffic laws and prevent accidents.

This included raising rumbles a few metres to the toll stations, deploying more police officers, introducing speed guns as well as the use of reinforced steel at the stations.
