Attorney General Justin Muturi on Tuesday, January 17, asked President William Ruto to consider giving the outgoing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chair Wafula Chebuakti a job in government.

Speaking during an engagement meeting with the Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices, Muturi noted that Chebukati should not be allowed to retire.

He argued that leaders with the character and values of the outgoing IEBC Chair were hard to find and that he should be given a second chance in public service.

"I hope this administration, through President Ruto, will find some other place for you to continue leading that country with that very same resolve

"When they released to us the 2022 Post Election Evaluation Report, I looked at Chebukati and wondered what metal is made of because he is indeed a Kenyan to emulate. You made all of us very proud by standing firm," Muturi remarked.

The AG asked the chairs of other independent commissions and independent offices to emulate Chebukati by standing firm and maintaining their independence.

On his part, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recognised the IEBC Chair and commissioners Molu Boya and Abdi Guliye for their role in the August 2022 General Election.

He vowed to ensure that the government would stand with them even as they headed for retirement given that they provoked 'very powerful and dangerous' people.

"As a responsible government, we have made adequate arrangements so that in your retirement, you have full protection and security to enjoy your life without any fear," Gachagua wrote.

On his part, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi encouraged the commission and independent institutions to work with the government as long as their mandates were not interfered with.

During the 2022 Jamhuri day, Ruto feted Chebukati with the Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH) while Molu and Guliye received the  Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS).
