Tourism and National Heritage Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza on Tuesday, January 17, announced plans by the government to develop a database detailing information on all heroes and heroines in the country.

Malonza, who spoke when she visited freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi's widow Elsie Mukami, noted that the database would help to track and look after the heroes and heroines, especially in their old age.

Further, she added that the government - through the National Heroes Council - will work on erecting monuments both in Kenya and abroad in honour of the selected individuals.

The goal of the monuments, she added, would be to accord the heroes and heroines a befitting recognition.

"The National Heroes Council under the State Department for Culture and Heritage will soon have a comprehensive database of all heroes and heroines in the country and a framework for tracking and supporting them.

"We are committed to recognizing and restoring the dignity of our national heroes and heroines,” Malonza stated.

Malonza's visit came days after the family of Dedan Kimathi accused key figures in the government of neglecting Mukami Kimathi who was ailing.

According to a statement shared by the family on Friday, January 13, Mukami was detained at the Kenyatta National Hospital over a bill of Ksh1 million.

They further claimed that efforts to reach President William Ruto for assistance in clearing the bill went unsuccessful despite the stature of the widow.

However, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua promised to offer help to the family. In addition, he sent Embakasi Central Member of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru to assess the situation of the Kimathi family.

Gachagua later visited Mukami at the KNH and met her relatives before offsetting the arrears.
