The wife of Wycliffe Vincent Owuor, one of the suspects in the Ksh72 million Nairobi West ATM heist that took place in 2019, has denied knowledge of the criminal lifestyle that her husband was accused of.

While taking to the stand for cross-examination at a Nairobi Court on Tuesday, January 18, Dorcas Wamaitha Ngugi denied knowledge that her husband stayed with a police officer, inside the police quarters for four years.

Appearing before Justice Mugure Thande, Ngugi defended her slain husband's reputation and instead maintained that he was a hospital worker instead of an armed robber.

Ngugi also denied knowledge of her husband being in possession of a gun at their homes in Thika and Nairobi. She affirmed that she was appalled when her husband was nabbed by police officers and suspected to be the mastermind of the Ksh72 million stolen from a Nairobi West ATM in 2019.

However, according to Ngugi, her husband had been acquitted in the Ksh72 million bank heist.

Prosecution: Did you know that Vincent was living in police land for 4 years? ( he lived with his police friend)

Wife: I did not know.

Prosecution: He is your husband, how could you not know?

Wife: I don't know and I have not heard.

Prosecution: Is it the same way he did not tell you that he had Ksh7 million in his car?

Wife: I heard that from you.

According to the wife, they relocated to Thika after her husband received multiple threats from the police. Owuor was gunned down in Kayole, Nairobi in May 2020.

Four police officers were arrested in June 2022, in connection with the murder. They, however, pleaded not guilty and were released on bond.

A statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that Owuor was killed on March 24, 2020, after a fierce shootout between him and the police. At the time, Owuor was out on a Ksh500,000 bond.

“The mastermind in Ksh72 million Nairobi West ATM heist last year; Wycliffe Vincent Owuor was today gunned down in a fierce shootout between a three-man gang of robbery with violence suspects and detectives responding to a distress call from the public at Kayole Junction in Nairobi," DCI stated.
