A man and a female companion died while on a late-night picnic at the banks of Juja dam after their car plunged into the water reservoir.

Murera Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Ngatha Wambiri on Wednesday, January 18, confirmed that the two occupants of the vehicles drowned.

A team of divers and firefighters from Kiambu County successfully located the car and recovered the body of the woman from the dam.

"We got here at dawn and we pulled out one body. The second body is still trapped in the car but we should be able to bring the body of the deceased to shore," one of the drivers stated.

Eyewitnesses told the press that the car arrived by the dam on Tuesday evening. The two occupants did not alight from the vehicle.

However, the vehicle began moving towards the dam at a slow speed. Efforts to alert the occupants of the impending danger proved futile.

First responders watched the car disappear into the large pool of water. Owing to the darkness, the rescue mission was put off to the next morning.

The body of the deceased was ferried to the General Kago Funeral Home. Police have launched investigations into the circumstances under which the two died.

Locals claimed despite the area being a popular picnic site, the dam was a ticking time bomb.

They demanded that the area surrounding the dam be fenced-remarks, which were echoed by Wambiri.

"I will table a bill in the county assembly to have all five dams in the county fenced to reduce the number of lives lost," he stated.
