Dagoretti North Member of Parliament Beatrice Elachi on Wednesday, January 18, raised an alarm over an alleged grabbing of school land in her constituency.

The lawmaker was in her normal activities of issuing bursaries to her constituents when she passed by the school, only to stumble on ongoing construction works.

Elachi noted that a developer had erected a perimeter wall within the land she noted was part of the school.

According to her, grabbing the land would be to the disadvantage of the girls from the constituency who she explained have no other options for accessing their studies.

"This is the only girl’s school that I have now that can accommodate children from Kawangware because most of the schools I have in my constituency are National Schools,” she stated.

The former Speaker Nairobi County Assembly called upon the government to prioritize schools within the city while issuing title deeds, noting that they were at risk of losing land to developers.

In addition, she vowed to lead in efforts to recover the land from developers in a bid to protect the fate of the constituents who depend on the school.

She further committed to contacting the Principal Secretary in the Lands Department, Nixon Korir, over the matter.

“So, the best thing is government to give the schools of Nairobi their title deeds so that they can know where their boundaries are and how they plan for the school," she added.

Cases of grabbing school lands are not new in the city after the Lang'ata Primary land dispute which sparked a controversy in 2015.
