“We remain optimistic that at the end of the four-year period, they will come back as winners. Our hope is that this program, as it also offers mentorship and coaching will equip them with the right tools to be transformational leaders in society,” he stated.

Reading a message from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, Deputy Director and Project Coordinator Ministry of Education, Jane Mbugua welcomed the noble act by Equity Group.

"The support given by Equity Group and its partners is a boost to the government’s 100 per cent transition to secondary schools. I commend Equity for being a true partner to the government in furthering the socio-economic development agenda of the people of Kenya.

"We are aware of the tremendous impact of programs such as Wings to Fly. With proper resourcing of education, we can support needy families, uplift the society and avoid school dropout.” Mbugua stated.

Germany’s Ambassador to Kenya  Sebastian Groth lauded the two institutions for handing the 2022 KCPE top performers a life-changing opportunity.

“As the German Development Agency continues to partner with Equity Group to offer these scholarships annually, it is our hope that the scholars here will find inspiration from this facility to motivate them to become great leaders in their communities and society,” Groth remarked.

All beneficiaries convened at the Pangani Girls High School for their induction training program ahead of the official unveiling of the 13th cohort.

Among those who benefited from the programme is Julius Chacha Mwita, who scored the second highest marks in the national exam, 429.

Mwita noted that his mother, who is a vendor at a market in Isibania, could not afford to pay his school fees. He had been called to Kabsabet High School.

"Most successful people have a painful story to tell and every painful story has an ending, I aspire to become a doctor and I believe that with the Wings to Fly scholarship, I will achieve this,”  he stated.

The Wings to Fly scholarships have been funded by Equity Group in partnership with the German Development Agency, KfW.

It includes full tuition fees for four years, a comprehensive mentorship program, a back-to-school hamper, psychosocial wrap-around support, and medical care while in school.

The scholars on completion of their high school and admission to universities will transition into the Equity Leaders Programme (ELP).

Beneficiaries are selected by Community Scholarship Selection Boards (CSSBs) which carry out face-to-face interviews and home visits before awarding the scholarships to the most deserving scholars.

The CSSB also tracks the students' academic performance and is concerned with the general welfare of the scholars.
