Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhimabo was on Monday, January 23, elected as the Vice President of the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians.
In the statement that was sent to newsrooms on Tuesday, January 24, the lawmaker will deputise Belgian Member of Parliament Samuel Cogolati who was duly elected as President of the organisation.
"The Committee consists of 10 members from all over the world. Members serve in a personal rather than national capacity.
"They are selected on the strength of their competencies and commitment to human rights," CHRP announced.
At the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, Millie will work with her colleagues to establish robust discussions on the specific legislative agenda that touches on the global community.
The organisation, which was established in 1889 is dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue.
Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians has since grown into a truly global organisation with 178 Members and 14 Associate Members.
"Every year, many MPs around the world face persona challenges or mistreatment. The IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians seeks to protect and defend them.
"The only international mechanism with such a remit, it has an outstanding track record of helping MPs under attack," the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians explained.
The vocal legislator will serve as a member of the IPU Governing Council that will approve the Committee’s decisions, especially, on matters highlighting the importance of parliamentary solidarity.
The Suba North Parliamentarian has cumulatively served for more than twenty years both as an elected and nominated Member of the National Assembly.
She is known as a fierce supporter of Oranga Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Raila Odinga who is also the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition boss.
