The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) headed by Noordin Haji distanced itself from the Wednesday, night (February 8) alleged police raid at the home of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

In an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, February 9, the ODPP clarified that it was yet to receive a file detailing charges leveled against the former CS from either the police or the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The DPP further maintained that his office did not participate in investigations and cast doubt on the legitimacy of the raid claims believing that it was dramatised.

"There is no file to my office either from the Police or the EACC. In my opinion, this looked like a dramatisation.

"I do not take part in the investigations... Even EACC was not involved in the incident," the DPP clarified.

Matiang'i's Karen home was allegedly raided by an elite squad of police with the former CS's lawyers claiming that the motive was to arrest him.

"My client is holed up as if he is a former fugitive in his own country. This is a former Minister in charge of security and the police. Civility must be retained.

"They want to arrest our client, but no offence was disclosed. I can confirm to every Kenyan in this country that the life of Matiang'i is at risk," demanded lawyer Danstan Omari who rushed to the Karen home on Wednesday night.

Soon after, the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome denied police involvement in the raid explaining that no officer had been dispatched to the home.

"I wish to clarify that no police officer under the NPS was sent to former CS Matiang'i residence at all," he told the press.

EACC boss Twalib Mbarak, who had also been linked to the raid, confirmed to the press that none of his officers had taken part in the raid and that the office did not have anything to do with it.

ODPP Withdrawal of Cases

Regarding the recent withdrawal of high-voltage cases, the ODPP explained that all the cases had been dropped due to a lack of enough evidence and after being subjected to the full judicial process.

Among the halted cases included graft charges against National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) CEO Geoffrey Mwangi, the case against former Kenya Power Managing Director as well as a murder case against Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa.

Some political quarters, soon after, accused the ODPP of dishonesty.

The DPP, however, dismissed those accusing his office of a sinister motive in the handling of the cases explaining that the politicians were doing so out of political expediency.
