The Kenyan government allocated the Ministry of Devolution a budget of Ksh1.7 billion in Supplementary Budget for the financial year ending June 2023,

The Devolution Ministry was, however, declared defunct by President William Ruto and was scrapped on October 27, 2022, when he nominated cabinet secretaries.

Despite it being scrapped, the government allocated funds to help the Ministry oversee six key functions.

The management of devolution affairs in the Ministry was allocated Ksh216 million of the Ksh1.7 billion.

The Ksh21 million was a review of the initial Ksh337 million that former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government had allocated for devolution affairs before leaving office.

Uhuru’s administration had similarly allocated the now defunct ministry Ksh582 million for Intergovernmental relations.

Ruto, through an executive order, tasked the Office of Deputy President to co-ordinate the intergovernmental relations between the National and County Governments

The sector has now received a boost of Ksh373 million and now will be allocated Ksh956 million.

The government also allocated the scrapped Ministry Ksh321 million for human resources and support services.

Despite the Ministry being done away with, it will still undertake capacity building and Civic Education at a cost of Ksh193 million.

The government slashed Ksh24 million that had been approved by Uhuru’s government for finance management services in the ministry.

For the financial year ending June 2023, the department will now receive Ksh26 million.

Lastly, the Kenyan Government will spend Ksh1.4 million on Information Communication and Technological Services.
