A Nairobi-based court on Thursday morning, February 16, ordered a former Kisii County staff to refund the Ksh3.1 million salary he earned for being in possession of forged certificates.

According to Anti-Corruption Judge Esther Maina, the former county staff member failed to give sufficient evidence to prove that his certificates were genuine.

The former administrator was accused of using fake papers in 2014 to secure the employment opportunity and worked for three years and two months before tendering his resignation.

During that time, he was paid a cumulative salary of Ksh3.1 million.

After reviewing the evidence, Justice Esther Maina ruled that the county staff intentionally used forged academic certificates to secure his job.

According to the judge, the former administrator filed an application from a job advertisement and presented the fake papers to the county government and was shortlisted before finally landing the job.

It was reported that the suspect forged a document belonging to a Diploma graduate who graduated in 2006.

Justice Maina faulted him for intentionally withdrawing a monthly salary without having the requisite qualifications.

The court also pointed out that the former county staff had not appealed against the stipulated charges.

The suspect's lawyer, in his defence, sought the court to grant him a stay order. In his defence, the former administrator noted that he took a stab at politics after tendering his resignation in 2017.

He argued that he had never presented forged documents as alleged in court.
