Rohan Shah, 14, dazzled judges in the 2022 Young Travel Photographer of the Year award in the 14-year-olds and under category.

Shah's submission of a heron flying off with a skink in its beak from Masai Mara won him the runners-up prize.

"I am humbled to have won the runner-up in this year's Travel Photographer of the Year competition in the 14-year-olds and under category. Looking forward to a super journey ahead," he stated.

The young photographer had sent in a brief description of his outstanding photo that captured the bird grabbing food.

‘"The grey heron managed to get hold of a very slimy skink - a type of lizard - by piercing the creature’s head. The heron flew away showing off its large wingspan," the young photographer explained.

For his entries, Shah had submitted a night photography portfolio that featured several animals captured at Lentorre Lodge.

"This is where the biodiversity of this area and free-roaming wildlife makes this the best hide-photography destination in Africa," he praised the lodge.

From the photos, the animals are captured perfectly with their reflection on the water mimicking a second animal.

According to Shah, it took one year and a half to grow his skills with the help of his mentor, Jeffrey Wu, an Internationally renowned wildlife photographer, with whom his journey still continues.

The winner of the category was Kaia Tham, 14, from Australia. She was praised for creating photos of reflections on things often overlooked.

"Seeing the world in a different way and exploring it with a phone rather than a camera has given this young photographer's portfolio a fresh feel and a different perspective observing the streets of Lisbon," one of the judges commended Tham.

Additionally, in the 2022 awards, a photo of one of the last white rhinos in the world, Najin, and her keeper Zachary Mutai taken at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy was one of the winning photos.

The photo was taken by Slovenian photographer, Matjaz Krivic.
