Businessmen took to the streets protesting a move by the county government of Nakuru to have them vacate their premises.

The traders from Mexico Base area decried that the notice given to them on February 21, 2023, to move out of the space on February 22, 2023, was unfair and uncalled for.

The over 150 businessmen located at Nakuru City Central Business District (CBD), did not understand the reasoning behind the order from Governor Susan KIhika's administration.

“We fail to understand the move by the county government because some of us have been working here for over 30 years,” complained the businessmen's chairman.

According to the businessmen chairman, Kariuki Mwangi the notice was issued due to plans by the county government to level the ground and add cabros.

Mwangi indicated that the idea to add cabro to the space was not necessary, especially at the car wash space.

The group of traders consisting of small businesses decried that they had been on the spot for a long time and deserved better treatment.

However, the traders expressed discontent with the alleged reason for their eviction revealing that they were not confident with the government.

The traders stated that they had remained compliant with the regulations including payment of licenses.

Samuel Njau, one of the traders asked the government to come up with better terms of relocation and compensation for traders who earn their living from the spot.

He termed the impromptu vacation as unfair and inhumane to the traders who cried out for their families that depended on them for survival.

The traders vowed to stay put and resist any eviction scheme unless better plans were put in place to address the issue.
