President Willliam Ruto on Monday, March 6, directed the military to surrender 70 acres of land for the affordable housing project in Nairobi.
Speaking during the commissioning of a 6,000-house-units project in Starehe, Ruto announced that the land would be used to build houses in Kiambiu.
The President explained that sourcing land for the investment project became a headache owing to the current location of the Kiambiu informal settlement.
"We have agreed with the military that they will donate 70 acres of land so that we can build houses for the people of Kiambiu," he revealed.
Ruto instructed Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary (CS) Zachariah Njeru and Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga to oversee the implementation of the project.
"Let them define what portion of the land will be used for affordable or low-cost housing so that the project can begin as soon as possible," he added.
The Head of State called on the locals from the regions to take up jobs and business opportunities that will arise from the projects.
He maintained that no skills or labour will be imported for any housing project and called for more women to take up jobs in the construction industry.
On the other hand, he sounded a warning to bosses and managers exploiting potential employees in exchange for jobs.
Ruto unveiled East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament (MP) Suleiman Shahbal as an investor in the Starehe project.
Shahbal's firm, GulfCap Real Estate, was contracted to develop the property. The EALA MP assured Ruto that his firm would meet all human housing needs in the project.
“GulfCap Real Estate‘s philosophy revolves around building a lifestyle, not just apartments hence the sharp focus on providing facilities touching on every aspect of the well-being of homeowners,”
