Kenya Police, on Wednesday, March 8, mounted blocks on all roads leading to State House in Nairobi as well as those heading to state lodges across the country.

In Nairobi, the area was also cordoned off by the heavy presence of police officers in anticipation of a demonstration from a section of Kenyans decrying the high cost of living afflicting the citizens.

Some of the roads where roadblocks have been laid include; State House Road,  State House Avenue and Processional Way as well as some parts of Dennis Pritt.

The roadblocks coincided with an announcement from Opposition Leader Raila Odinga whose 14-day ultimatum to the ruling regime expires on Wednesday at midnight.

A separate police contingent was also deployed to secure the Kisumu County State Lodge.

The Azimio leader had earlier announced a major mass action should the state fail to reduce the continually rising cost of living.

Raila Odinga, on Saturday, March 4, had announced a change of tact that would see demonstrations being held simultaneously across the country.

While attending the burial of Luo Council of Elders Chairman Opiyo Otandi, Raila announced that the responsibility for mobilising mass rallies had been taken away from Azimio's top brass.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) county officials were tasked with mobilising Kenyans ahead of Raila's big announcement on Thursday, March 9.

On Wednesday, March 8, while speaking at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi, Raila revealed that his plan for mass action was still on course.

"We want you to wait for the time. The deadline is on Wednesday at midnight, so you will hear from us on Thursday," Raila remarked.

The former Prime Minister had on, February 22, given President William Ruto-led government a 14-day ultimatum to lower the cost of living.

One of the ways Raila threatened to push for lowering of the cost of living was by holding mass rallies at State House, Nairobi.

On March 2, Ruto brushed off Raila's demands remarking that he would not be intimidated by the opposition while dispensing his constitutional mandate.
