The Communications Authority on Wednesday, March 15, issued a clarification on the events that transpired during the disrupted event at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Complex in Kisumu City.
In a statement obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, CA’s Head of Corporate Communications Patricia Muchiri noted that the authority had converged in Kisumu to mark World Consumer Rights Day.
However, the event was disrupted after a group of rowdy youth invaded the venue and caused mayhem.
The event, according to the CA, commenced as planned with a high-level roundtable that aired live on a local television station in line with the theme of "Empowering Consumers through better Quality of Service and Experience".
High-profile dignitaries were in attendance including Director General Ezra Chiloba and a host of representatives from notable corporate organisations in the country.
The chaos, the statement added, erupted shortly after Chiloba addressed the meeting and was preparing to leave for another venue within the city.
However, the Director General managed to escape from the rowdy group and proceeded to address the next meeting at Ciala Hotel where he addressed the delegates.
"As he was leaving the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports complex, he encountered a group of protesters who unfortunately interrupted what was otherwise a successful event," the statement read in part.
Earlier in the day, a group of youth stormed the venue and turned the arrangements upside-down to create confusion.
Some of the men were seen scrambling for the food and refreshments reserved for the guests as the delegates scampered for their safety.
The motive of the attack was not yet clear as security agencies were yet to issue a statement on the same.
However, Kisumu had earlier in the day experienced disorder as a group of youth allied to Raila Odinga's Azimio la Umoja took to the streets in protest of the high cost of living.
The Nyanza region counties of Kisumu, Migori and Homa Bay and parts of the Western Region have all experienced protests since the declaration by Odinga calling for mass action.
