Kenyan Couple Dies in US Highway's 6-Car Accident

A Kenyan couple was among four individuals who died in a car crash on 71 Freeway in Chino Hill in the United States.

According to California police officers, the two were in a car that collided head-on with a 2021 Volvo, which entered the wrong side of the freeway on Sunday, March 19. 

Officers detailed that the car, with two occupants was speeding causing the driver to spin around in the air before the vehicle settled and burst into flames.

Four other vehicles that were on the freeway were also rammed at the scene and the casualties were rushed to the hospital by an emergency crew that arrived shortly after the accident. 

“The investigation caused the southbound side of the 71 Freeway to close for more than eight hours on Sunday,” noted the authorities.

The drivers of the vehicles that collided were reported to have died instantly.

“A 2021 Volvo, occupied by two people, was travelling north in the southbound lanes of State Route 71 when it hit a 2018 Volvo. 

“The sudden impact of the collision caused a 2001 Toyota and a 2008 Honda to also strike a 2018 Volvo. Two other cars were also involved,” the police report read in part.

Later, the authorities identified the couple as 38-year-old Ruth and 43-year-old Gedion who were residents of Lake Elsinore in the US.

Additionally, several other individuals suffered injuries in the collision. However, the exact number of casualties had not been announced by the time of publishing.

In a separate incident, a Kenyan cyclist in the UK 'Sule' passed on in a high-speed crash on August 2022 while participating in a cycling race.

In his honour, a UK company Factor Bikes launched a limited Ksh908, 900 (€6,599) Ostro Gravel bike in liaison with Team Amani

The limited edition -Team Amani-edition Ostro - was engraved with the words "Captain, Friend, Brother, Sule" on the top tube in honour of the cyclist.
