Social media was on Sunday, March 26 awash with reports of a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer from Embakasi, Nairobi stranded in Nyahururu town and in dire need of attention.
Photos of an Identity Card belonging to a KDF officer went viral for the better part of Sunday morning, March 26, as Kenyans online called upon the military to take action.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, contact personnel from the Department of Defence was categorical that the unknown person was not a KDF officer.
The source added that it was a case of a lost and found ID whereby the stranded person picked the personal document and began to brandish it, as his own.
"It was a case of lost and found ID. The owner of the ID card had previously reported the matter and after the reports went viral, KDF officers were able to retrieve the ID and give it back to the rightful owner," the source intimated.
The source, however, declined to give details as to the next course of action taken on the unknown person- whom they branded as mentally unwell.
The viral reports had elicited mixed reactions with East African Legislative assembly (EALA) MP Simon Mbugua voicing his concerns.
"This is one of Kenya Army officers, he is not feeling well. A well-wisher whose number is (withheld) is hosting him in Nyahururu Town.
Kenya Army Bosses should reach out to the well-wisher and take this soldier to hospital for urgent medical attention," his post on social media read.
Efforts by Kenyans.co.ke to reach the well-wisher proved futile as calls and texts went unanswered.
The majority of Kenyans questioned why a KDF officer would be stranded despite having a comprehensive medical cover.
"Kenya Army, Kenya Police and Prisons officers have good medical covers. He should be assisted. I wonder what might have happened," read a post from Kariuki Mwangi.
"Is he not covered by health insurance? Doesn't the soldier have the contact of seniors? Is he a rogue who is now cornered by fate and exposed his hiding. Anyway ,call military police," Gichinga George also commented.
