Ahead of the Azimio-led protests on Monday, March 27, the General Service Unit (GSU) officers barricaded several roads in Nairobi.
GSU trucks were positioned on roads leading to State House including the Processional Way and State House Road to prevent the entry of vehicles.
Roadblocks were also positioned at Mlolongo on Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way and the Central Business District (CBD) to monitor and regulate the movement of motorists and pedestrians on the road.
In addition, roadblocks and water cannon trucks were also positioned along Juja and Syokimau and Kibera Estate Roads in anticipation of the protests.
At the same time, there was a heavy presence of armed police officers in several parts of Nairobi including Milimani Road.
Those working at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre(KICC) had difficulty accessing the building after roads leading to the building and City Hall were barricaded.
The roads include Harambee Avenue, City Hall Way, Wabera Street, and Taifa Road.
Police trucks were also deployed in the Kamukunji area as police officers were stationed at strategic points.
Additionally, there was a heavy police presence outside the National Archives and Kencom in the CBD.
Motorists who normally use the roads in Nairobi were redirected to alternative routes.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga maintained that the planned demonstrations would continue despite the tough warning from Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome who stated that the demonstrations were illegal.
"Maandamano Mondays and Thursdays remain on as scheduled. Let the work begin," Raila stated on the morning of Monday, March 27.
